Word problems that build real reasoning
Word problems get their own 10-level ladder designed to build genuine problem-solving skills, not keyword-matching habits.
- Early levels teach keyword clues like “altogether” or “left behind.”
- Later levels remove the keyword hints, so kids have to understand the context.
- Upper levels introduce 2-step and 3-step word problems.
- Guided help: if they get stuck, “Show me how” walks through the solution step by step.
- 200 story problems in every language, 20 at each level, with new numbers every time.
Three examples, from easy to hard (the numbers change every time):
- Level 1: Owly sells 6 cups of lemonade in the morning and 5 cups in the afternoon. How many cups did Owly sell in total? (11. “In total” is the clue word.)
- Level 5: 9 cubs are coming to story time, but there are only 6 cushions. How many more cushions are needed? (3. No clue word: your child has to see that “more” is the gap.)
- Level 10: Owly bakes 10 chocolate cookies and 8 oatmeal cookies, and ties 4 ribbons on the box. The cookies are shared equally among 3 friends. Each friend eats 2. How many cookies does each friend have left? (4. Three steps, and the ribbons are there to be ignored.)

What age is OwlyMath for?
Kids from Pre-K through 3rd grade, roughly ages 4 to 9. Beginners start by adding numbers up to 10, with totals up to 20; older kids work through multiplication tables and division up to 100.
Are there ads or subscriptions?
No. There are no ads and no subscriptions. Addition, subtraction, and multiplication practice for one player is free forever. A one-time purchase, about the price of a coffee, unlocks the Plus features. On iPhone and iPad you can try Plus free for 7 days first. Nothing is charged automatically: when the week is up, you choose to buy Plus once or keep the free version.
How much does Plus cost?
About the price of a coffee, paid once. The App Store and Google Play show the exact price in your currency before you buy, and one purchase covers your whole family.
Is OwlyMath a math game?
It has what kids like about math games: a Daily Challenge, streaks, badges, and Owly celebrating every new personal best. But every minute goes into real math facts practice. There are no coins, no ads to watch, and nothing to unlock by grinding.
How does OwlyMath compare with IXL and Khan Academy?
They do different jobs. IXL and Khan Academy cover the whole curriculum, from counting to fractions and beyond. OwlyMath concentrates on the basic facts and keeps coming back to the ones your child gets wrong or answers slowly. Will it help my child learn the times tables?
Yes. Multiplication covers every times tables fact from 0 × 0 to 10 × 10, timed and tracked one fact at a time, so practice keeps coming back to the ones your child still hesitates on. Multiplication practice is part of the free version.
Does it work for UK and Australian maths?
Yes. The number facts are the same everywhere: number bonds to 10 and 20, addition and subtraction, and the times tables up to 10 × 10, which covers Reception to Year 4 in England and Foundation to Year 3 in Australia. England’s Year 4 multiplication tables check also includes the 11 and 12 times tables, which OwlyMath does not cover.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. OwlyMath runs entirely on the device. There is no sign-in, no account, and no third-party tracking or advertising code — practice history stays on the phone.
How does the adaptive practice actually work?
Every answer is timed and recorded fact by fact. Each new session is built from that history and weighted toward the facts your child misses or answers slowly, with never-tried facts mixed in so the full table gets covered. Challenge mode leans much harder on the tricky ones.
How many word problems are there?
200 in every language, 20 at each of the 10 levels, and the numbers change every time a story comes up. A story doesn’t come back until your child has seen all 20 at their level.
When does the difficulty change?
Math facts practice comes in sessions of 10 questions. Each session is built when it starts, from your child’s history so far, so the mix shifts from one session to the next. Word problems move up a level after three correct answers in a row, each on the first try. A wrong answer never sends a child back down.
Can I set the difficulty myself?
You choose between Adaptive, a balanced mix of the facts your child finds tricky and fresh ones, and Challenge, which concentrates on the hardest facts. There is no setting to limit the range of numbers, and word-problem levels go up on their own.
Is five minutes a day the limit?
No. Short daily sessions work best, which is why we suggest about five minutes, but there is no limit. Your child can play as many sessions as they like.
What happens when my child gets one wrong?
Nothing bad. A wrong answer never ends a session — they can try again, and “Show me!” draws the problem out with visual counters and pictures so the miss turns into a lesson.
